• Reinforcing the security of Reunionese agriculture in terms of production, as well as food safety in terms of the sanitary quality of local production, notably involves the genetic improvement of plant species with regard to their resistance to diseases. For this, it is necessary to have collections of Agricultural Plant Genetic Resources (RGVA) in order to enhance them with a view to diversifying Reunion's agricultural production. These collections also contribute to preserving Reunion's agrobiodiversity by safeguarding native species threatened with extinction by human activities (destruction of habitats and introduction of invasive species).

  • The project is divided into six main actions:

    • Development of the "Vatel" Biological Resource Center including the conservation, genetic characterization and distribution of vanilla varieties and the pursuit of the quality approach, ISO9001 standard.
    • Development of varietal selection/improvement programs and sanitation of plant material (citrus, onions, maize, eggplant, vanilla, garlic, cassava)
    • Production of starting plant material for the production of basic seeds of eggplant, pepper, onion, maize and cucumber varieties
    • Genetic control of bacterial wilt in market gardening Solanaceae (eggplant, tomato, chilli/peppers)
    • Genetic control of root and stem rot in vanilla plants
    • Enhancement of native species in urban and peri-urban development, regeneration of degraded spaces while preserving terrestrial biodiversity.

  • Expected changes

    • The range of vegetables and cultivated plants incorporating "forgotten plants" is increasing.
    • Methods of genetic control of the diseases studied are available.
    • New genetic and molecular tools allow breeders to create resistant varieties adapted to their production areas.
    • Innovative landscaping programs in urban and extra-urban areas incorporate native plants through methods of seeding and establishment of priority native species.

    Expected impacts

    • The Vatel Biological Resource Center ensures the conservation of major species of interest for agrobiodiversity in the Indian Ocean, and regularly acquires new plants of agronomic or horticultural interest.
    • The profession has a wide range of sanitized vegetable seeds.
    • The main vanilla diseases are controlled.
    • Plants grown in greenhouses are naturally resistant to the main diseases encountered and these diseases are well documented.
    • Developers have both a wide range of well-described endemic plants to restore degraded environments or for urban development, as well as techniques for planting these plants in environments that are difficult to access. They also have sufficient knowledge at their disposal to maintain or even develop biodiversity wherever possible.
