• Vegetable crops in Mayotte are subject to strong pest pressure from the tropical-humid climate of the island. In order to limit the use of synthetic phytosanitary products as much as possible, the actors of the agricultural innovation and transfer network (RITA) have studied, in consultation with the objectives of the Ecophyto plan, the alternative means of control against two bioaggressors of major economic impact: the cucurbit maggot, Dacus ciliatus and the tomato maggot, Neoceratitis cyanescens .

  • The INNOVEG project aims to structure and develop the vegetable sectors of Mayotte by intervening at the various stages of the production process up to harvesting, and also of the transformation of products, by testing new methods and tools. Objective: to sustainably improve the agronomic and environmental performance of crops and open up new marketing markets, while ensuring the transfer and dissemination of innovations in the farming community using a participatory approach.

  • Expected changes:

The changes of the INNOVEG project are:
    - A reduction in the use of synthetic phytosanitary products in market gardening through the development of alternative techniques such as anti-insect nets
    - The establishment of an epidemiological surveillance network with the publication of a plant health bulletin
    - The revival of the production sector of healthy citrus plants
    - The production of banana suckers by the PIF method (Plants from stem fragments)
    - The semi-industrialization of mataba
    - Spreading and planning of pineapple production

    Expected impacts:

    The INNOVEG project aims to:
    - Strengthen the sectors and their structure to ensure the production and income of farmers
    - Ensure the supply of markets with local productions
    - Reduce the impact on health and the environment by reducing the use of pesticides
