UMR Innovation
The Joint Research, Innovation and Development Unit in agriculture and food brings together agents from INRA, CIRAD and Montpellier Supagro. The mission of UMR Innovation is to inform the decision-making of public and private actors by producing knowledge on innovation and development processes in agricultural and food systems.
Research focuses on the innovation process, from understanding the actors' objectives for innovating to analyzing the effects of these innovations on development. They also cover methods for supporting innovating players. UMR research is carried out in France and abroad. The interdisciplinary project of the UMR makes it possible to combine skills in agronomic sciences and social sciences (economics, sociology-ethnology, geography, management sciences-law). The Innovation and Development in Agriculture and Food UMR develops research on situated innovation, i.e. innovation taking place in specific action situations, mobilizing actors who innovate to respond to a variety of development issues.
We analyze the systems of action of these actors (their practices, their strategies, their discourse, their relational networks, their institutional affiliations, etc.). Our study situations relate to several thematic areas: agricultural production systems, agri-food markets and products, access to food and consumer practices, land use planning and urban agriculture, R&D and consulting organizations. These themes are approached at different scales (farm, territory, market, public policy, etc.) based on field work favoring case studies and their comparisons. The UMR is recognized both for its publications and thematic expertise in the agricultural and food sector, and for its theoretical and methodological productions on innovation and development.
