Key words
  • The Institute of Rural Development (IDR) comes from the Higher Polytechnic Institute (ISP) created in 1973 at the University of Ouagadougou to train in 5 years Rural Development Engineers (IDR) in three options: Agronomy, Livestock and Waters and Forests. In 1979, a second course was created for the three-year training of Rural Development Techniques Engineers (ITDR) in the same options. But the latter was abolished in 1989. In 1995, the IDR was transferred to the Polytechnic University of Bobo-Dioulasso. Since then, the IDR has diversified its training by creating:

    • in 1996 a fourth option, Sociology and Rural Economy, in addition to the three options already existing;
    • in 2000, postgraduate training (DEA in Integrated Management of Natural Resources and unique Doctorate in Rural Development);
    • in 2004, training in Agricultural Extension comprising two courses: the course of Senior Technicians in Agricultural Extension and the course of Advisors in Agricultural Extension.

    Since its creation, the institute has trained, all options combined, nearly 1200 engineers distributed as follows: 390 ITDR and 810 IDR. The average annual output flow is 35 engineers. In addition, the IDR offers postgraduate training in master 2 (former DEA) and thesis.

    Administratively, the IDR is headed by a Director, assisted by a Deputy Director. Educational and research activities are organized within four departments corresponding to the four options: Agronomy, Livestock, Water and Forests, Sociology and Rural Economy.
