Overseas Ministry

  • The Overseas Ministry is the administration responsible for coordinating government action in the overseas departments, overseas communities, New Caledonia and Clipperton Island and for participating in the development and implementation of the rules applicable in these communities. It is headed by the Minister for Overseas Territories, a member of the French government.

    The Overseas Ministry carries out 3 types of missions in all 12 overseas territories.

    A mission of sovereignty

    Since it exercises the authority of the Overseas State in the Overseas Departments. Its powers are those exercised by the Ministry of the Interior in mainland France. In the overseas territories, in New Caledonia and in the other Territorial Collectivities, he exercises the authority of the State in compliance with the statutes and the organization of these territories.

    An intervention mission

    Through the financing of social housing, and actions for the integration of young people in the overseas departments.
    The Overseas Ministry fulfills three main missionsbringing together

    A coordinating mission

    Coordination of the action of the ministries which intervene overseas in specific fields (for example: education, culture, youth and sports…) or to work for its economic and social development (for example: industry, agriculture, employment…).
