SUSTAINABLE TERRITORIES
The overseas departments and regions continue to use pesticides, to ensure agricultural production in quantity and quality. If past uses of pesticides have generated pollution (such as chlordecone in the West Indies), new uses also cause pollution (such as glyphosate). In this context, an evolution towards agroecological practices allowing a drastic reduction in pesticide applications appears to be a priority. Many producers are also committed to this dynamic.
However, the evolution towards these new production systems raises many questions in terms of sustainability. Producers are indeed encountering difficulties in ensuring this transition (lower income, lack of manpower, arduous work, lack of recognition, etc.). By involving stakeholders at all stages of the process of this agro-ecological transition, from production to recovery, the Sustainable Territories project aims to support the development of virtuous production systems that are not dependent on pesticides.
Four tasks to complete the project:
- Explore drivers of change related to pesticide use in current and future production systems.
- Co-design 0 pesticide systems by identifying the brakes and levers to build solutions with the actors.
- Consolidate, formalize and develop support methods and tools.
- Support the development of territories.
Each territory has its own roadmap, in order to consider its specificities and its position on the trajectory of this agroecological transition.
In the long term, overseas departments and regions will have drastically reduced their use of pesticides.
Guadeloupe, Martinique and Réunion will have succeeded in their agroecological transition. The quality of agricultural products will increase without production suffering from a drop in quantity.
